Design Guidelines of CNC Turning

Explaination
Radii / Fillets Internal radii should be at least 1/3 of cavity depth. Larger radii help avoid tool damage and improve machining efficiency.
Threads and Tapped Holes Diameter 1.5–5 mm: depth 3×diameter; ≥5 mm: depth 4–6×diameter. Hole depth should not exceed 10×diameter. Follow standard drill/thread sizes.
Minimum Wall Thickness For metals: ≥0.8 mm; for plastics: ≥1.5 mm. Thicker walls improve structural integrity and reduce vibration/deformation.
Holes Minimum diameter: 1 mm. Hole depth should not exceed 4×diameter to ensure effective machining and chip evacuation.
Cavity Depth Depth should be ≤4×width to avoid chatter, tool deflection, and other machining issues.
Part Size Part size limited by machine envelope. 3-axis machines usually have larger build volume than multi-axis.
Feature Alignment Design features on a single face when possible. Multi-face features increase cost in 3-axis machining.
Undercuts T-slot undercuts: 3–40 mm wide. Dovetail undercuts best with 45° or 60° angle for strength and manufacturability.
